The original version which was recorded in 1942 was unfortunately damaged and we all are familiar only with the 1947 piece. Though it sold only 5,000 copies soon after its release ‘Rocking around the Christmas tree’ by country singer Brenda Lee continued to gain popularity and sold around 5 million copies. The original 1946 version of Nat King Cole’s ‘The Christmas Song’ entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1974. Four other versions of this song were recorded of which Carmichael’s orchestrated piece of 1961 is still popular. Meredith Wilson wrote ‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas’ in 1951 for his musical ‘Here’s Love’ and this song still continues to mesmerize listeners even after sixty years.
Frank Sinatra’s ‘Have yourself a merry little Christmas’ is truly one of the best songs and it was revised a bit to be included in Judy Garland’s movie. Though this Andy Williams song was never promoted as a single, ‘It’s the most wonderful time of the year’ is undoubtedly one of the most famous Christmas songs. Adolphe Adam in 1847 composed ‘O Holy Night’ and the violin version of it was the first music ever to be broadcasted over the radio. Johnny Marks was an American song writer and his number ‘Have a Holly Jolly Christmas’ has not died out of fame.
‘Let it snow’ was written by Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn and this 1945 tune is still considered one of the best in Hollywood. The Christmas feel is brought out beautifully by the holiday ambience and the seasonal lyrics. ‘Christmas Canon’ was one of the numbers in the 1998 album ‘The Christmas Attic’.
