A popular way for people to meet is through an online dating service. Places like eHarmony and Match have made it easy to meet people and to get to know something about them ahead of a face to face meeting.
Each service will give you some information about how to use their site. This article will give you some tips on how to use the sites successfully!
Psych your self up! Ready...Set...GO!
Get yourself in the mood to do online dating. Plan to spend some time setting things up. The more thought and preparation you put into your profile, the more likely you will get results. Skimp on this and people will see it in your profile!
Once you are ready mentally, research the online sites to pick one that clicks with you. There are the large well-known subscription sites like eHarmony and Match. There are free sites like Plenty of Fish. There are niche sites that are only oriented to tall people, short people, Christians, Jews, Asians, African Americans, you name it!
Have you tried the general sites and not finding people with similar tastes and interests? Try a niche site. Have you been on a niche site and found a lot of people with similar interests that you just don’t click with? Try one of the general sites. Don’t restrict your self to one narrow area of the population.
When you’ve selected your site, now is the time to start your profile. Again, it’s time to be excited abut what you are doing. It will come across in your profile if you’re angry or sad, depressed or melancholy. The words you use and the way you put them together in your profile tell others about yourself. More so than what just the words say. Have good energy when you do your profile.
Create your profile in pieces. Do a little and take a break. Come back to it when you’re refreshed. Don’t make it a grueling “I have to get it done in one sitting” session. And don’t procrastinate all day then sit down at midnight with the intention to start and finish your profile.
The care and time you take in creating your profile reflects the care and time you will put into a relationship. And that will come through to the viewers of your profile!
How truthful should you be in a profile? The statistics show that the vast majority of people who do online dating embellish their profiles, even just a bit. Men and women prefer to “tweak” their profiles in different ways. Consider this, you’ve spent all the time putting together your profile, people have been looking at it and you’ve been emailing back and forth with one or two people. The day comes when you meet them for coffee. Do you really want to explain why your profile says you’re 5 feet 8 inches tall when you’re actually 5 feet 4 inches?
Start out on the right foot with people; be honest in your profile!
Here’s a tip for doing photos in a profile. Do it right or don’t bother! People will scan your photo(s) and in two seconds decide if they want to read your profile or hit the “Next” button. Have someone take a good photo of you as you look now. Don’t use a cell phone photo of you taken at the mall three years ago. Leave guns, snakes and clown faces out of the photo, too!
Now that you have put your heart and soul into your profile, have your best friend look at it. Have someone look at your profile who will give you truthful feedback. Maybe you should leave out that you were the 1998 Peanut Butter Queen at the Georgia State Fair or that you can drink a pint of Guinness in three seconds flat!
And if you are uncomfortable showing your profile to a friend, then maybe you aren’t quite ready for the online dating scene. It might be time to go back to that “get excited and get prepared” step.
Online dating is not for everyone, but for those who enjoy meeting new people this way, it can open up a whole world of possibilities!
