Since time immemorial, a starry night has been the subject of curiosity for mankind and has turned out to be something that recurrently triggered the imaginative human mind to find some logical patterns in the visible existence of stars. Be it the arrangement of stars in a specific manner or a shape emerging out of them, they have immensely helped from voyagers to astronomers, in identifying the directions of their travel and in co-relating explicit star patterns to make predictions. These types of patterns or shapes forming as a result of grouping of stars with a precise periphery are known as Constellations.
Mythical significance of constellations in many cultures across the world is quite ancient and interestingly, it rests upon the thought that specific grouping of stars and formation of patterns thereby, has something to point out or forecast. But based upon the studies on how civilizations like Babylonians, Arabs, Egyptians or Greeks used constellations and further the astrological and scientific findings, International Astronomical Union presented a more definitive view that “the universe has been alienated in eighty eight constellations comprising exact frontiers”.
Almost all of these eighty eight constellations get visible in all parts of globe but there are some that get seen during a particular portion of year and in the northern or southern hemisphere. It is interesting to note that most of the constellations are best viewed from the Northern hemisphere but the Southern constellations are more in number than the Northern constellations. Also, those constellations that are best viewed from the Northern hemisphere include all twelve constellations named after the zodiac signs i.e. Aries to Pisces. Besides, naming of constellations has also come from an ancient story, a mythological prodigy or animals.
Looking at their historic consequence, fact cannot be denied that from planting to harvesting, agriculture too must have largely depended on constellations in ancient times and farmers must be having their own ways of predicting weather conditions suitable to their profession. It is not surprising that olden studies about constellations have been more elaborated today and are used in reading past and future, flawlessly. Their nomenclature on zodiac signs is not a coincidence and numerous things can be forecasted when a typical constellation named after a sun sign gets visible in the sky.
Amongst some of the profound constellations, you may often come across Orion. Orion constellation is known to have formed when stars create a hunter-like pattern and seem to be travelling against the motion of earth. Ursa Major is another known constellation that gets identified as formation of great bear as a result of star pattern. Consisting of 7 stars, this constellation is called “sapta-rishi” in India. Existence of some stars that shine relatively less, bear like figure gets visible to our eyes. This constellation is also known as the Big Dipper.
With the growth of astronomical studies in China, a considerable variance can be noticed between the western and Chinese constellations. Though the division of sky for classification of constellations differs, constellations dedicated to zodiac signs do exist in Chinese astronomy too.
In simplest manner constellation is a precise arrangement of stars in the sky. The identification, recognition and naming of all eighty eight constellations observed till now are very old as many civilizations like Greeks, Arabs, and Babylonians initiated their observation thousands of years ago. Greeks managed to identify and name 48 constellations but we limit our discussion here to Virgo constellation, which
Much alike the fascination of constellations that are seen on a dark night, are the myths associated with each of them. Talking about the Taurus Constellation, you may find various folklore coming from different civilizations or communities and one mythological incidence depicted say in Hebrew culture may be interestingly different from another, say the Sumerian. The most famous story about the Taurus
Alike all other constellations, there can be myths found associated to the Scorpio constellation too, that come from various civilizations. The most renowned folklore connected with this constellation signifies the story of Orion. Orion, who was born to Eurayle and Poseidon, carried a notion that he is so powerful that he would not let a single wild animal survive on earth. His
Sagittarius constellation is known to be one of the largest constellations of the southern hemisphere. The name comes originated from Latin, meaning an archer. But it has myths associated in other cultures like Greek, Sumerian, etc. too. The image displayed as a result of formation of this constellation is of a centaur, which is a man-horse combination, wherein the man holds a
Understanding what are constellations and about their origin, we can quote in simple words that they are the formation of stars that form some object and that object could be an animal (Leo, Aries), a human being (Virgo, Aquarius, and Gemini), a sea creatures (Pisces, Cancer) or even an object (as Libra). Studying constellations started about 4500 year ago in China, Egypt
Libra Constellation is located amid the Virgo and Scorpio constellations and so as to identify its periphery, you can see another three constellations i.e. Lupus, Serpens and Phiuchus. Peculiarity of this constellation is that you may not find any stars of high magnitude in it, but watching the formation of Libra constellation in the sky is a delicacy for sky observers because
Constellations being a virtual mental arrangement with groups of stars, they help us divide the sky meaningfully into parts. If we look at the sky in a clear night, group of stars form pictures and diagrams and we name them given the influence of so many factors. Leo has the fifth position out of twelve zodiac constellations. Leo is a Latin word
The Gemini constellation comprises of two extremely shining stars that are referred to as twins in various ancient civilizations. While the Arab mythology refers them as twin peacocks, Hindu myth identifies them as twin Gods and the Egyptians say it is a pair of goats. These two stars are named Pollux and Castor, who were the children of Leda, the mother and
The mythical representation in Capricorn Constellation is a creature which is partially a fish and a goat. Its Latin word indicates a male-goat having horns but the credit of identifying it first, goes to Ptolemy, the Greek astronomer. Other cultures and civilizations such as Sumerian and Babylonian were not unaware of this constellation either and while the Sumerians named it as Suhur-mash-sha,
Representation of a crab is the most common outcome of the studies of all ancient civilizations over formation of the Cancer Constellation. According to the Greek folklore in this regard, Zeus when fell in love with the Tiryns queen Alcmene, the child resulting out of their union was a son and was named Heracles (or Hercules), who later on turned out to
Looking at the sky at night is really an amazing experience and as we, human beings, have the finest brain on earth, many imaginations popup naturally when we see those vast number of stars on a clear night. Our imagination allows us to find something very special from these stars, such as different shapes and patterns. But even more than that, humans
There is no doubt that sky is a fascinating subject forever for human beings due to its mystery, secrets and beauty. Despite so much of findings, we do not have enough information about space till date and for that reason, it continues to stay mysterious for us. Stars have continually played a major in beautifying the sky and groups of these stars
