Rise and Shine: Understanding Your Rising Sign

If you are interested in astrology, you have probably made a pretty strong estimate as to who you are based on your zodiac sign. However, the zodiac sign does not control the majority of how we interact with others. Instead, this part of our personality is made up by the rising or ascendant sign. Have you ever been asked what your rising sign is? If so, you probably stumbled a little bit then gave your zodiac sign as the answer because you simply didn’t know the answer and didn’t know how to figure it out. Determining your rising sign is actually very easy by creating a chart or checking a book out from the library that demonstrates how to identify your rising sign.

Understanding your rising sign is important because, in short, it represents how you present yourself to the public. It is determined by where and when you were born. There are different schools of thought on whether or not you have to stay in the same region where you were born to truly maximize the aspects of your rising sign, but many simply take the location of birth into account when calculating this piece of your personality puzzle.

The following is a quick analysis of the various rising (or ascendant) signs.

Aries: A shy, optimistic leader.

Taurus: Reliable and practical, often creative.

Gemini: Busy and always eager to communicate.

Cancer: Good listener and family-oriented.

Leo: Desperate for attention but a great leader.

Virgo: Eager to help others and family-oriented.

Libra: A social connector brimming with business ideas.

Scorpio: Secretive with good intentions but often socially combative.

Sagittarius: Positive outlook, loves variety and travel.

Capricorn:  A goal setter eager to succeed in business.

As you can see, the rising signs are as varied as the zodiac. Sometimes, the rising sign can conflict with characteristics designated by the zodiac but the personality aspects we will demonstrate with others often stem from the rising signs.

If you find the zodiac sign has not given you enough insight into what makes you tick, it is time to investigate your rising or ascendant sign. This will certainly give you insight into who you are and how you interact with others. Once you understand this part of yourself, you are more likely to be happy with the parts of your personality that – until now – may not have seemed to fit.
